Thomas III and Edward L. Ayers have a piece of digital scholarship entitled <a href=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/blogdivided\/files\/2010\/03\/small.cover_.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1196\" title=\"small.cover\" src=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/blogdivided\/files\/2010\/03\/small.cover_.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"160\" height=\"185\" \/><\/a>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www2.vcdh.virginia.edu\/AHR\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Differences Slavery Made: A Close Analysis of Two American Communities<\/a>&#8221; that analyzes Augusta County, Virginia and Franklin County, Pennsylvania in the period just before the Civil War. \u00a0While the scope of the article is to relate how slavery affected these two small communities, it contains some important analysis of the election of 1860 as well. \u00a0The method follows closely that used by Ayers in his excellent book <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=mKqjYCcs72gC&amp;source=gbs_navlinks_s\" target=\"_blank\">In the Presence of Mine Enemies<\/a>. \u00a0Analyzing primary documents from these two small towns close to the Mason-Dixon line sheds new light on previously held notions of how the buildup to the Civil War affected everyday Americans. \u00a0Of particular interest in this article is the summary of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www2.vcdh.virginia.edu\/xslt\/servlet\/XSLTServlet?xml=\/xml_docs\/ahr\/article.xml&amp;xsl=\/xml_docs\/ahr\/article.xsl&amp;section=text&amp;area=argument&amp;piece=summary&amp;list=summary&amp;item=politics_election\" target=\"_blank\">Politics and the Election of 1860<\/a> and the &#8220;points of analysis&#8221; from these towns in the<a href=\"http:\/\/www2.vcdh.virginia.edu\/xslt\/servlet\/XSLTServlet?xml=\/xml_docs\/ahr\/article.xml&amp;xsl=\/xml_docs\/ahr\/article.xsl&amp;section=text&amp;area=argument&amp;piece=findings&amp;list=campaign&amp;item=\" target=\"_blank\"> Campaign of 1860<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.vcdh.virginia.edu\/xslt\/servlet\/XSLTServlet?xml=\/xml_docs\/ahr\/article.xml&amp;xsl=\/xml_docs\/ahr\/article.xsl&amp;section=text&amp;area=argument&amp;piece=findings&amp;list=voting&amp;item=\" target=\"_blank\">Election of 1860<\/a>. \u00a0The digital format of this article makes it particularly compelling as the authors&#8217; points about each county can be summarized briefly in a side-by-side manner, and then expanded upon by clicking the link if more information is needed. \u00a0In this expanded view of the argument, there are links to\u00a0all of the supporting evidence and historiography at the bottom.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>William G.
