{"id":1000,"date":"2010-02-16T15:27:39","date_gmt":"2010-02-16T20:27:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/blog\/?p=1000"},"modified":"2010-06-16T10:20:58","modified_gmt":"2010-06-16T15:20:58","slug":"north-carolina-and-the-election-of-1860","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/blogdivided\/2010\/02\/16\/north-carolina-and-the-election-of-1860\/","title":{"rendered":"North Carolina and the Election of 1860"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1001\" src=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/blogdivided\/files\/2010\/02\/ellistp.jpg\" alt=\"ellistp\" width=\"163\" height=\"300\" \/>As previously mentioned in this blog, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lib.unc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill<\/a> supports a fantastic website for researching all aspects of the South during the Civil War era called <a href=\"http:\/\/docsouth.unc.edu\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Documenting the American South<\/a>. \u00a0On this website, there are several important resources that relate to the crucial election of 1860. \u00a0A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.googlesyndicatedsearch.com\/u\/docsouth?q=%22election+of+1860%22&amp;sa=Search\" target=\"_blank\">simple search<\/a> of the collection for the term &#8220;election of 1860&#8221; does not yield much relevant information; therefore, as is often the case, the <a href=\"http:\/\/docsouth.unc.edu\/browse\/subject\/\" target=\"_blank\">subject index<\/a> is more useful for finding these materials. \u00a0In this instance, the best materials are found under the heading <a href=\"http:\/\/docsouth.unc.edu\/global\/result.html?term=United+States+--+Politics+and+government+--+1857-1861.\" target=\"_blank\">United States &#8212; Politics and Government &#8212; 1857-1861<\/a>. \u00a0An important document found here is John Willis Ellis&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/docsouth.unc.edu\/nc\/ellis\/menu.html\" target=\"_blank\">speech<\/a> at the 1860 North Carolina Democratic Convention. \u00a0It presents a look into the Democratic party in North Carolina leading up to the election of 1860. \u00a0While the speech was an acceptance of his party&#8217;s nomination for a second term as governor, Ellis focused on national issues in his address. \u00a0He attacked William H.
