In addition, Documenting the American South has a <a href=\"http:\/\/docsouth.unc.edu\/fpn\/shepherd\/summary.html\" target=\"_blank\">short essay<\/a> about Shepherd.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Places to Visit<\/strong><br \/>\nShepherd served in the 43rd North Carolina Infantry  Regiment and was captured during the Battle of Gettysburg. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gettysburg.stonesentinels.com\/Confederate\/43NC.php\" target=\"_blank\">43rd North Carolina&#8217;s monument<\/a> at Gettysburg is located on East Confederate Avenue.
