Gray&#8217;s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/digital.library.cornell.edu\/cgi\/t\/text\/text-idx?c=mayantislavery;idno=14852805\" target=\"_blank\">Assaults Upon Freedom! \u00a0A Discourse, Occassioned by the Rendition of Anthony Burns<\/a><\/em> (1854),\u00a0Theodore Parker&#8217;s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/digital.library.cornell.edu\/cgi\/t\/text\/text-idx?c=mayantislavery;idno=23877116\" target=\"_blank\">The New Crime Against Humanity: A Sermon Preached at the Music Hall, in Boston, on Sunday, June 4, 1854<\/a><\/em> (1854) , and Thomas Wentworth Higginson&#8217;s\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/digital.library.cornell.edu\/cgi\/t\/text\/text-idx?c=mayantislavery;idno=03818412\" target=\"_blank\">Massachusetts In Mourning: A Sermon, Preached in Worcester, on Sunday, June 4, 1854<\/a><\/em> (1854). \u00a0Henry David Thoreau also responded to Burns&#8217; situation with an essay entitled\u00a0&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=ndg6AAAAMAAJ&amp;dq=%22Slavery%20in%20Massachusetts%22%20Thoreau&amp;pg=PA171#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\">Slavery in Massachusetts<\/a>&#8221; in 1854. In addition, the Massachusetts Historical Society has several collections with \u00a0material related to Burns&#8217; case, such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.masshist.org\/database\/doc-viewer.php?item_id=431\" target=\"_blank\">two<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.masshist.org\/database\/doc-viewer.php?item_id=1667\" target=\"_blank\">broadsides <\/a>. The Charles Cushing Barry Papers contain <a href=\"http:\/\/www.masshist.org\/objects\/cabinet\/february2002\/february2002.html\" target=\"_blank\">the checks<\/a> used to purchase Burns&#8217; freedom in 1855. (You can see a detail image of the checks on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.masshist.org\/objects\/cabinet\/february2002\/check1.html\" target=\"_blank\">this page<\/a> . Other collections with material related to Burns&#8217; case include the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.masshist.org\/findingaids\/doc.cfm?fa=fa0233\" target=\"_blank\">Dana Family Papers<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.masshist.org\/findingaids\/doc.cfm?fa=fa0250\" target=\"_blank\">John A. Andrew Papers<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.masshist.org\/findingaids\/doc.cfm?fa=fa0283\" target=\"_blank\">Theodore Parker Papers<\/a>. In addition,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.masshist.org\/findingaids\/doc.cfm?fa=fa0265&amp;hi=on&amp;tag=archdesc&amp;\" target=\"_blank\">this online finding aid<\/a> provides an overview of all the collections relevant to African American History at\u00a0the Massachusetts Historical Society.<\/p>\n<p>Important secondary sources include Jane H. Pease and William H. Pease&#8217;s <em>The Fugitive Slave Law and Anthony Burns<\/em> (1975), Virginia Hamilton&#8217;s <em>Anthony Burns: The Defeat and Triumph of a Fugitive Slave<\/em> (1988), and Albert J. Von Frank&#8217;s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=Vj7f249hSwsC&amp;lpg=PP1&amp;dq=The%20Trials%20of%20Anthony%20Burns%3A%20Freedom%20and%20Slavery%20in%20Emerson's%20Boston&amp;pg=PP1#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=true\" target=\"_blank\">The Trials of Anthony Burns: Freedom and Slavery in Emerson&#8217;s Boston<\/a><\/em> (1998).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Places to Visit<\/strong><br \/>\nLewis Hayden was a member of the Boston Vigilance Committee and participated in the failed attempt to rescue Burns in 1854. While the <a href=\"http:\/\/home.nps.gov\/boaf\/historyculture\/lewis-and-harriet-hayden-house.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Lewis and Harriet Hayden House<\/a> is on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.afroammuseum.org\/trail.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Black Heritage Trail<\/a> in Boston, it is a private residence. See the <a href=\"http:\/\/home.nps.gov\/boaf\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Boston African American National Historic Site<\/a> website for more information.
