{"id":470,"date":"2010-04-28T11:01:40","date_gmt":"2010-04-28T15:01:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/grandreview\/?p=470"},"modified":"2010-04-28T13:13:22","modified_gmt":"2010-04-28T17:13:22","slug":"25th-usct-regiment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/grandreview\/2010\/04\/28\/25th-usct-regiment\/","title":{"rendered":"25th USCT Regiment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=nHn_qCyDQykC&amp;dq=%22History%20of%20Pennsylvania%20volunteers%2C%201861-5%22&amp;as_brr=4&amp;pg=RA5-PA1026#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-471\" style=\"border: 6px solid black;\" title=\"25thusct\" src=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/grandreview\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/25thusct-300x271.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"271\" srcset=\"https:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/grandreview\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/25thusct-300x271.jpg 300w, https:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/grandreview\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/25thusct.jpg 626w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After being organized in January 1864, the 25th USCT Regiment was deployed to Texas, although it never reached its intended destination. \u00a0The steamer that carried the regiment was caught in a storm and sprung a leak, and the men barely kept her afloat long enough to dock safely in the North Carolina harbor. \u00a0The regiment arrived in New Orleans in May 1864 just as the Confederates were gaining the upper hand in the Red River Campaign; therefore, instead of continuing on to Texas, the regiment was sent to Florida for garrison duty. \u00a0In January 1865, the government ordered the 25th USCT Regiment into active duty as part of an effort to organize a division composed entirely of African-American troops. \u00a0However, the regiment was deemed too inexperienced to take part in any active field operations, and its numbers dwindled as a result of an outbreak of scurvy due to poor nutrition.<\/p>\n<p>Colonel Frederick L.
